The CIO is the new innovator
|
| By: |
Matt Brown, VP, Practice Leader serving CIO professionals at Forrester |
| |
In the decade after the bursting of the dotcom bubble IT organizations have been fully focused on industrialization and rationalization. As a result of that a vast majority of 90 percent of IT departments can be characterized as a cost optimized utility. Nowadays as the board is trying to explore new venues in the digital economy to increase turnover the cio needs to change from a technology expert into a partner in innovation. To perform well in this ongoing dialogue with the board the cio needs to invest in new skills and capabilities. Only then is he or she capable to lead the way in innovation in the new era of business technology. |

Jan Peter de Valk, VP Information Systems CIO Benelux at DHL Express |
| |
Forget the green targets, it's all about the blue ones. Targets and objectives that lie way beyond imagination ask for a change of mindset, less fear and entrepreneurship. Always with the end customer in mind. The presentation by CIO Jan Peter de Valk will be about three fundamental things: motivating your environment by creativity and team spirit, striving to be ‘first choice’ for the employees; customer orientation resulting in a huge level of satisfaction and being their first choice by listening well and a flawless execution; and finally pragmatic innovation, what makes DHL the first choice for investors. |

eScience in Practice |
| By: |
Jacob de Vlieg, CEO & Scientific Director Netherlands at eScience Center |
| |
Within academic research, but also within the R&D at companies, high-performance computing infrastructures are increasingly applied. The IT function could have a major role in facilitating this within the organisation. Jacob de Vlieg, director of the Dutch eScience Center and professor at the University of Nijmegen, will tell what is possible within this area. In particular the added value of its own organization, founded by SURF and NWO, for organizations, education and research. To bridge the gap between eScience facilities and the industry, CIO Magazine and the eScience Center will introduce a new award for the best or most appealing eScience application in business. The prices could consist of (a combination of) advice or support by eScience engineers or computing on dedicated systems. During his presentation Jacob de Vlieg will tell some more about this award. |

The power of true innovation |
| By: |
Daan Roosegaarde, creative director of the social design lab at Studio Roosegaarde |
| |
Nowadays ever shrinking and more powerfull technology makes it possible to pull technology out of the screen and integrate it with the real world. Daan Roosegaarde with studio's in Rotterdam and Shanghai develops innovative, interactive landscapes that let people interact through technology. In 2008 Roosegaarde created the 'Sustainable Dance Floor' which generates electricity through the motion of dancing. More recently he constructed the concept of smart highways with the infrastructure company Heijmans that makes future roads interactive and sustainable.
In his presentation Roosegaarde will point out the way he innovates: he combines technology in a different and unexpected context and thus constructing a whole new experience. In his work as an artist Roosegaarde's is thus able to create remarkable works of art that define a new relation between architecture, people, and technology. As such he stands out as a clear and concrete example how you could put technology to use and give it an innovative role in your organisation.

Socrates Reloaded: The Case for Ethics in Business & Technology |
| By: |
Frank Buytendijk, Beingfrank Research |
| |
Through transformation we strive for ever-more operational excellence in business operations. But is that always GOOD? Are there things we shouldn't do or shouldn't know? Using many real-life examples, Buytendijk take you on a tour through modern-day ethics in business and technology. Can the police use navigation data to plan speed traps? Can business analysts analyze anything they want? Are there limits to higher productivity? Does technology have a moral footprint? Esoteric? Hardly! In the years to come, taking the power of technology too far will cause large enterprises significant public embarrassment, and worse. Executives and politicians will have to step down for not having thought through these issues. A must-attend presentation to survive the coming decade. |
| |
|
| |
During the JIT dinner, Frank's book will be officially presented to Arnoud van Gemeren, editor-in-chief of TITM. After dinner there will be a book signing for attendees who would like to have a copy. But, according to Frank, only if you promise you will read it! |

ROUNDTABLE SESSION BY RIVERBED TECHNOLOGY |
| Title: |
Application performance in the cloud era |
| Theme: |
Innovation with IT means introducing innovative applications. No wonder SaaS services spread like wildfire: they offer easy access to new functionality. Cloud services are offered in very different flavours: from 100% cloud-based, to hybrid applications to traditional solutions with 'a touch of cloud'. We could ask ourselves if this collection of services, together with legacy applications, can adequately support the business. Can the performance of all these applications and services be guaranteed, or even managed? And if so, what would be a good approach? During this interactive session, organised by Riverbed, we talk about application performance in the cloud era. |

ROUNDTABLE SESSION BY (APC BY) SCHNEIDER ELECTRIC
|
| Title: |
Energy Architecture: the Role of IT |
| Theme: |
Within organizations, we see only subtle movement in terms of an integrated approach to energy efficiency. Facility managers are particularly busy with the operations and buildings, CTOs focus mainly on technical product development and CIOs are only involved with energy as one of the corporate sustainability projects. For the CIO there is a huge opportunity in this area. First, he or she is able to make a contribution to a sustainable operation by means of an energy-efficient delivery of IT. On the other hand the CIO can deliver a company-wide insight into the energy management of the organization: cost, capacity, quality of service and so on. The development of a so-called energy architecture, based on the underlying ICT architecture, is a huge step forward for both the CIO and the organization. |

Big Data Business Drivers |
| Theme: |
Mobile devices, POS systems, ERP systems, loyalty cards, social media and external market reports are providing controllers, strategy teams and marketing divisions with tons of data. We are witnessing a revolution in the market driven by an explosion of data, but how much of this data is actually helping your bottom line? One of the most obvious and dramatic changes of the last decade is the disappearance of the main shopping street. People are interacting online, which has a tremendous impact on almost any line of business. In order to survive, organizations need to develop new, innovative ways to add value to the business they are in, both in brick and mortar stores and through online channels. A huge potential competitive advantage is in the interpretation of the data they collect and possess. Large organizations can interact with customers on a personal level by analyzing their specific needs and behavior with Big Data analytics, in other words: Internet becomes local! In this session we explain with concrete examples how to establish competitive advantage by converting data into wisdom and provide first-hand insights in the development of a Big Data analytics program.

| Title: |
A flexible workforce around the IT organisation – how to arrange this? |
| Theme: |
The economic crisis demands the utmost of organizations. The pressure on cost reduction is high, while demand for a short time-to-market is increasing. Do you have the right people to cope with these challenges? The aging of the population has started to show effect and the new generation of employees is hard to retain. Is a flexible workforce for the IT department the solution? A solution that makes costs more flexible and enables rapid deployment of professionals if needed? We would like to discuss your views on the opportunities and challenges of a flexible 'labor reservoir' with you and a number of your colleagues. On what scenarios would you base the size and composition of the flexible workforce? What roles would be for internal staff only? Are external service providers necessary to maintain and develop the workforce? |

ROUNDTABLE SESSION BY TYGRON SERIOUS GAMING |
| Title: |
Change Scenarios as a Game |
| Theme: |
People spend a significant portion of their time on the Internet and in virtual worlds. Not infrequently, events or processes will be trained on the computer and afterwards brought into practice. Think of simulators for aircraft and ships. Serious gaming is a similar phenomenon: in a simulated reality participants can improve and develop their (management) skills. Tygron Serious Gaming will provide a live game session during the Annual Conference Innovation & Transformation. This will involve the same restrictions as in the real world: time, money, economic conditions, politics, you name it. Different participants may have different goals. Just like in the real world, where the operations department, the IT function, sales, finance but also the government all have their own interests. The results of the game session will be presented later in the day during the plenary program. |
